Grand Rapids car rental company says it’s ending its leasing program in Michigan

Michigan’s largest car rental and leasing company said Tuesday it is ending its car rental business.

The Grand Rapids Car Rental and Car Shoppe said in a news release it is no longer leasing vehicles and leasing spaces for its employees and contractors.

The Grand Rapids company has about 3,600 employees and employs about 1,400 people.

The company’s move comes a few months after a number of other rental companies stopped leasing vehicles, including Detroit-based Hertz and Los Angeles-based Luxury Rental.

The Michigan Department of Transportation said the car rental companies’ decision to shut down the business comes after a series of safety and safety issues.

It said the company had not provided adequate information to the state about its fleet and vehicles.
